In order to receive a scholarship, students must be admitted to the UNC School of Media and Journalism and in good standing in the 2019-20 academic year. All applicants' status will be verified as of Feb. 1, 2019. Because funds from this cycle will be awarded during the 2019-20 academic year, students graduating in May 2019 are not eligible to apply. Freshmen with assured admission to the MJ-school are not eligible to apply.

Applicants are generally considered for all scholarships. Some scholarships give preference based on:

  • Academic interests
  • Geographic location
  • Financial need
  • Programs of study

All recipients will be notified by April 2019.

Other funding opportunities

  • MJ-school undergraduate majors who have been admitted to the school are also eligible to apply for a wide array of awards made possible by generous donors. Awards differ from scholarships in that award amounts are paid directly to the student rather than to the student’s UNC account. Awards may have tax implications. Learn more about awards here
  • Applicants may also seek financial assistance from the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
  • Graduate students should contact Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Studies Heidi Hennink-Kaminski for more information regarding graduate opportunities.
