Scholarships

Eligibility

In order to receive a scholarship, students must be admitted to the UNC School of Media and Journalism as a MEJO major (not minor) and in good standing in the 2019-20 academic year. All applicants' status will be verified as of Feb. 1, 2019. Because funds from this cycle will be awarded during the 2019-20 academic year, students graduating in May 2019 are not eligible to apply. Undergraduate Assured Admission Program students are not eligible to apply until officially admitted to the MJ-school.

Applicants are generally considered for all scholarships. Some scholarships give preference based on:

  • Academic interests
  • Geographic location
  • Financial need
  • Programs of study

Application process

The 2019-20 scholarship application system will open Jan. 1 - Feb. 1, 2019. The applications will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. For more information, contact mjschoolscholarships@unc.edu.

A few application system clarifications:

  • AcademicWorks dashboard
    • Clicking the UNC logo in the top left corner will take you to unc.edu, NOT the AcademicWorks homepage
    • View all progress through the My Applications tab in the top left
    • In the Recommended and All sections of the Opportunities tab, consider typing Media and Journalism into the Search by Keyword area at the top of the page to reduce the size of the listing displayed to only MJ-school applications
  • General Application
    • Campus Street Address is where you live as a student, not where the MJ-school is located
    • NC Residency County is the county of your permanent North Carolina home address (if you are a North Carolina resident)
    • Major is Media and Journalism or Business Journalism (plus any additional majors)
  • Conditional Application - School of Media and Journalism
    • The listed specializations apply to undergraduate students who entered UNC prior to Fall 2017. The listed areas of study apply to undergraduate students who entered UNC beginning Fall 2017 or later.
    • As a Media and Journalism major, your specialization in the MJ-school (if entry prior to Fall 2017) would be Advertising, Broadcast & Electronic Journalism, Editing & Graphic Design, Interactive Multimedia, Photo & Video Journalism, Public Relations, Reporting or Strategic Communication / your area of study in the MJ-school (if Fall 2017 entry or after) would be Advertising & Public Relations or Journalism
    • As a Business Journalism major, your specialization in the MJ-school (if entry prior to Fall 2017) is Reporting / your area of study in the MJ-school (if Fall 2017 entry or after) is Journalism

All recipients will be notified by April 2019.

Other funding opportunities

  • MJ-school undergraduate majors who have been admitted to the school are also eligible to apply for a wide array of awards made possible by generous donors. Awards differ from scholarships in that award amounts are paid directly to the student rather than to the student’s UNC account. Awards may have tax implications. Learn more about awards here
  • Applicants may also seek financial assistance from the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
  • Graduate students should contact Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Studies Heidi Hennink-Kaminski for more information regarding graduate opportunities.
