John Wilson is a documentary filmmaker, educator and conservationist. He has written, directed and produced multiple documentaries for UNC-TV, including the Emmy Award-winning Dr. Frank: The Life and Times of Frank Porter Graham, narrated by Charles Kuralt, and the Emmy-nominated Senator No: Jesse Helms. Current projects include the Climate Stories NC documentary series with the UNC Institute for the Environment.

John co-founded UNC Student Television (STV) as an undergraduate in 1983, and received his MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California. He worked as a production supervisor and interactive division general manager for The Jim Henson Company in Los Angeles.

Before teaching in the School of Media and Journalism, John taught in the UNC Dept. of Communication and UNC’s Curriculum in Environment & Ecology, and at the American University School of Communication in Washington, D.C.

He is a trustee of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund, appointed by Governor Roy Cooper.
