Start Here / Never Stop Seminar

The UNC School of Media and Journalism celebrated its new name and kicked off its rebranding campaign with events in Carroll Hall on Aug. 28 involving students, faculty, staff, alumni and the University community.

The school’s Start Here / Never Stop tagline captures the idea that what students learn and experience here prepares them for successful careers and transitions in a dynamic media environment.

The event featured four of our star alumni with successful careers and interesting transitions of their own.

Our Mission

The new name for the UNC School of Media and Journalism follows the school’s evolution into a modern, innovative media school. It reflects the vibrant teaching, research and service that makes the school a leader among peers.

Our mission remains to create the next generation of journalists, strategic communicators, teachers and researchers prepared to ignite the public conversation and inform a robust democracy.

The Itinerary

7:15 – 8:30 p.m.

Interview and alumni panel discussion featuring:

Moderated by Dean Susan King

The discussion touched on topics such as industry trends, transitioning from student to professional life, transitioning from one industry segment to another, what panelists wish they had known when they first started out, the most important thing they've learned, etc.

8:30 – 9 p.m.

Gathering on the quad in front of Carroll Hall for food and festivity.

9 p.m.

Gathering at TRU Deli + Wine on Henderson Street.

Instagram Contest Winners

Students participated in our Instagram contest by posting a creative short video clip or photo on Instagram between Aug. 28 and Aug. 31 and including our new tagline: Start Here / Never Stop. The five best submissions were announced Sept. 1 and those contestants each received a prize pack!

No matter where my career leads me, I know that it will have started right here on the steps of Carroll, where I’ve taken countless pictures of our beautiful campus. I'm grateful to be attending the the School of Media and Journalism, which is constantly constantly striving to be better, fresher, and on top of the ever changing media landscape. It’s dedication to new media and succeeding in the digital landscape is seen in it’s name change from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to the School of Media and Journalism, a rebranding campaign I had the pleasure to play a small role in. This school has provided me with top-notch professors, classes, resources, and connections that are invaluable as I start planning for my career. Most importantly, this school has helped me better understand and put words to what I am passionate about: the intersection of advertising, psychology, and research. Though I don’t know yet where this passion will take me, I know it will have started here at UNC in the School of Media and Journalism. #StartHereNeverStop #unc
