Divided by the Sea

UNC School of Media and Journalism students Andrea Patiño Contreras and Gabriela Arp were awarded the VIMY Global Team award from the UNC Center for Global Initiatives to tell personal stories from the European migration crisis.
They spent one month documenting a small town in Southern Italy called Reggio Calabria, which has seen the arrival of thousands of refugees making the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean.

But some demographic factors tend to tip the scales toward future success or failure. The intersection of poverty and race can be a statistically dangerous place to grow up.
