Application Process

Undergraduates

Current UNC students do not formally apply to become Media and Journalism majors.

How to Become a Major?

  1. Pre-declare during first-year or sophomore year through the General College (optional)
  2. Complete 45 credit hours
  3. Earn a 3.1 minimum cumulative GPA
  4. Visit the student records staff in Carroll Hall for assistance

Prospective undergraduate students who are not currently enrolled at UNC – such as high school seniors and transfer students from another university – apply to the University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Students may declare their intention to major in Media and Journalism within the admissions application.

Minoring
A limited number of students are accepted to minor in the school. Prospective minors must submit an application in the Student Records & Registration suite in Carroll Hall by Jan. 15 of their sophomore or junior years.

Graduate Students

Prospective graduate students apply online through the UNC Graduate School.

Transfer Students

Transfer students apply to the University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Be sure to declare your intention to major in journalism and mass communication within your admissions application.
